What’s the Difference Between a Calzone and a Stromboli?

Not everyone knows the difference between a calzone and a stromboli, and it’s understandable why. These two delicacies are similar to each other but do have their differences.

Calzone (cal-zone-eh)

A calzone is similar to a slice of pizza, but the crust is turned over. Calzones were first made in Naples, Italy in the 18th century. They were enjoyed over pizza because they could be eaten on the go rather than with a fork and knife. Even today, calzones can be comfortably eaten while standing or walking. This is why they are often sold by Italian street vendors and pizza parlors off the boardwalk – like us!

Pick the ingredients you want for your calzone and we’ll fold them over into a crescent moon shape, then bake or fry it based on your order. Calzones in Fairfield NJ are served with the sauce on the side. Enjoy cutting off the cheese-filled pieces and dipping them into our fresh marinara sauce. Between the crispy dough, the melted cheese and the sweet plum sauce, the flavors come together like magic. It’s pure heaven!

Stromboli (strom-bowl-e)

A stromboli is more like a sandwich than a pizza. The ingredients are placed into doughy crust and then rolled into a loaf and baked. When you open it up, the inside looks like a pinwheel with layers of cold cuts, veggies and marinara sauce. Unlike a calzone that has the sauce served on the side, a stromboli has the sauce baked on the inside. This makes each bite equally satisfying.

The history of a stromboli isn’t as clear as the history of a calzone, but it’s believed to come from Pennsylvania or Washington in the 1950s. (Sorry! This isn’t a true Italian dish that comes from Italy.) Whichever tale you believe, we can all agree that a stromboli is a delicious alternative to a slice of pizza. And, while calzones can be made at home, strombolis in Fairfield NJ are truly a work of art.

How Many Servings are in a Calzone or Stromboli?

Here at Boardwalk Pizza, our portions are generous! Split them with a good friend or bring home the leftovers for another delicious meal. Or if you’re appetite is big for the day, by all means, indulge! Usually, our calzones and strombolis serve two people.

Our best calzones and strombolis in Fairfield NJ start off with round pizza dough that is folded in half. Eating a full one is like eating a small pizza! Hey, if you can do it, we’re not here to judge! But, if you want to make your dish healthier, stuff it with plenty of veggies and go lighter on the cheese. Also, opt to have your calzone baked, not fried. Our calzones and strombolis taste delicious when paired with one of our salads.

However you choose to eat your calzone or stromboli is fine with us. Our portions are generous, our dough is fresh and our fillings are plentiful, so you will definitely leave feeling satisfied. If you do stop into our restaurant, enjoy our bright, spacious seating area, nostalgic arcade and an order of our famous Zeppoles dusted in powdered sugar.
